The Department of Computer Science and Technology traces its beginnings to the Computer Science and Statistics Section of the former Department of Agricultural Engineering and Applied Mathematics. The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program was approved by the VSU Board of Regents on February 8, 2002 through Board Resolution No. 17, series of 2002, and was formally offered beginning in the first semester of School Year 2002–2003.

DCST was established as an academic department in March 2002 and, for many years, operated under the former College of Engineering and Technology. Following VSU's organizational restructuring, it became one of the constituent departments of the newly established Faculty of Computing in January 2025. Located at the VSU Main Campus in Baybay City, it offers the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program.

The program provides an in-depth study of software and hardware systems, the theoretical foundations of computing, scientific and technical problem-solving, software development, the practical application of computer science, and the social and ethical issues associated with technology. Its academic and research directions also support the development of ICT-based knowledge and technologies relevant to agriculture and other sectors, as well as collaboration in instruction, research, and extension.
