Jomari Joseph Barrera is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Technology at Visayas State University (VSU), a position he has held since April 2024. He previously served as an Instructor at VSU for nearly nine years, demonstrating a long-standing commitment to the institution. His academic career is built upon a unique foundation that blends rigorous industry practice with a passion for teaching.

He began his professional journey in the tech industry, first as a Software Engineer Intern at Azeus Systems Philippines and subsequently as an Advance Programming Specialist at IBM from 2013 to 2015. At IBM, he honed his skills in a project-based environment, handling script checking, coding, data management, and client support—experience that informs his practical, solutions-oriented approach to computer science education.

At VSU, Mr. Barrera is responsible for teaching advanced courses such as Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Structures, Graphics and Visual Computing, and Object-Oriented Programming. He is also deeply involved in mentoring student research and leading projects that apply computing solutions to real-world administrative and community challenges, with a strong focus on agricultural applications. His research leverages machine learning and computer vision for tasks like crop disease recognition and automated fiber grading. He holds an EDP Specialist eligibility and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Computing Society of the Philippines and the Philippine Society of Information Technology Educators.
